SANTA MARGHERITA LIGURE:
Santa Margherita Ligure occupies a beautiful position on the Gulf of Tigullio. The town dates from A.D. 262. The offical name of Santa Margherita Ligure was given to the town by Vittorio Emanuele II in 1863. Before that, it had many other names, including Porto Napoleone, an 1812 designation from Napoleon. Its palm-fringed harbor is usually thronged with fun seekers. It has a festive appearance, with a promenade, flower beds, and palms swaying in the wind. As is typical of the Riviera, the town's sandy, pebbly beach is packed with a party crowd in fine weather. Santa Margherita Ligure is linked to Portofino by a narrow road.
PORTOFINO:
Glamorous Portofino, 38km east of Genoa, is Liguria's most exclusive seaside resort and has long been popular with artists, writers and the international jet-set. Tucked into a narrow cove overlooking the rocky coastline, Portofino is one of Italy’s most picturesque, enchanting and romantic places.
There are many reasons why this tiny, cliff-lined port, called the “Pearl of the Mediterranean” continues to attract artists, poets, celebrities, and wealthy sophisticates from around the world. Set against a backdrop of a very agreeable climate and lush, luxuriant vegetation, the beauty of Portofino’s natural environment is surpassed only by the charm and intimacy of its narrow streets, hidden coves, quaint cafes and incredible charm. It is a town where little has been altered since the city government of nearby Genoa declared Portofino a national monument in 1935, requiring approval before any architectural change can be made to its structures. The piccolo harbor, classic Italian architecture, and wooded peninsula makes a Portofino visit very appealing.
