GENOVA:
Sprawled behind the huge port, Italy's largest and an increasingly popular stopoff for international cruise liners, Genova is a dense and fascinating warren of medieval alleyways, a district which has more zest than all the coastal resorts put together. Genoa made its money at sea, through trade, colonial exploitation and piracy. By the thirteenth century, on the heels of a major role in the Crusades, the Genoese were roaming the Mediterranean, bringing back ideas as well as goods. the city's architects were using Arab pointed arches a century before the rest of Italy. Aside from the cosmopolitan street life, you should seek out the Cattedrale di San Lorenzo with its fabolous treasury, small medieval churches such as San Donato and Santa _Maria di Castello and the Renaissance palazzi that contain Genova's art collections from the grandest days of the city's illustrious past.
PORTOFINO:
Once dubbed Portus Delphini (Harbor of the Dolphins) by Pliny the Elder, today it might be know as the Harbor of the yachts for the fleet of pleasure craft moored here while their rich and powerful owners take in the scene on the waterfront piazzetta. The sheltered, nearly hidden harbor and abundant verdure of the mountainside were attractive to ancient settlers and relic have been found here dating to Roman times. In 1950s and 60s Portofino became the rendezvous point for the rich and famous, setting the standard for international chic.
CASTELLO BROWN:
Castello Brown is a medieval castle that was built in the 17th century to ward off invading Turks. Purchased in 1867 by Montague Yeats Brown, British consul in Genoa, it was renovated and furnished as a private villa and became the seed for modern tourism in Portofino. The castle remained in Brown's possession for more than 80 years, eventually passing over to the commune which mantains it today as a venue for historical and art exhibitions. You can step inside the walls to enjoy a lush garden and the views of the town and the harbor below
