This private tour of the excavations of Pompeii, Oplontis and Herculaneum was created by our team of experts to offer the visitors a unique and unforgettable experience to discover three of the most prestigious archaeological sites in the Campania region: Pompeii and Herculaneum ruins that need no introduction and the smaller but definitely charming Oplontis with the wonderful “Villa of Poppea”. Furthermore, to lead this day of discovery you will have a private English-speaking REAL ARCHAEOLOGIST, just for you, a scholar of the ancient civilizations that inhabited this region in ancient times.
Pompeii ruins are probably the most famous archaeological site in the world. It is a vast area where wonders follow one another. Buildings, frescoes, jewelry, statues, plaster casts that have crossed, thanks to the now famous 79 A.D. eruption of Mt Vesuvius in almost unscathed the centuries to reach us full of history. A history that requires a guide like our REAL ARCHAEOLOGIST with a first-hand knowledge in order to appreciate all its nuances and frame it in the historical context of the epoch.
The town of Herculaneum shares with the nearby cities of Pompeii and Stabia the same sad fate: the eruption of Vesuvius was fatal even for this ancient city. Although Herculaneum has not been entirely brought to light, it can be assumed that the city covered an area equal to 1/3 of that of Pompeii with a population of about 4000-5000 inhabitants. Domestic building is certainly its most interesting aspect thanks to the good state of preservation of the upper floors and the various wooden structures (such as beds, stairs, roofs, etc.) due to the circumstances of the burial. This prodigious conservation of houses and wooden furnishings make this Roman city an incomparable archaeological wonder.
Unlike Pompeii and Herculaneum, Oplontis is free of tourists crowds so that you can immerse yourself even more in the atmosphere of the place and imagine, thanks also to the detailed explanations of our archaeologist, the intriguing woman supposed to live in the villa, the Empress Poppea Sabina, Nero's second wife. Our archaeologist will tell you the story of Poppea, at the same time fascinating and mysterious, but above all he will illustrate the luxury in which they lived here in Oplonti: huge gardens loaded with oleanders, salons and dining rooms with mosaic floors and walls frescoed, the huge rectangular outdoor pool etc.
This is a walking tour (NO transportation is included) and the transfer between the three sites will be by EAV Circumvesuviana railway trains. Quick lunch break if required. (Entrance tickets and train tickets are NOT included).
You’ll meet our professional English-speaking real Archaeologist - by a pre-arranged meeting point by main entrance of Pompeii site. Of course this tour can be customized to your needs and requests and, if you prefer, we can start it from Herculaneum instead of Pompeii. You’ll spend 2 hours in Pompeii ruins + 1 hour in Oplontis ruins + 2 hours in Herculaneum ruins (+ transfer time by train) together with our professional English-speaking Archaeologist and in each site you’ll see some of the most important houses and buildings.
Please be assured that we have organized this walking tour to be fun, informative and at the same time physically within everyone's reach. So put on comfortable shoes and get ready to discover these ancient towns in an amazing new way.
