Meeting with the driver and his car by Your hotel or cruiseship in Naples (or Sorrento).
Naples is the Campania’s capital city and a universe in its own right, imbued with fantasy, fatalism, superstition and splendour. Naples is a city of many facets where history is woven into the fabric of the present . Framed by the shining blue water of its bay, Posillipo on one side and the Sorrento Peninsula on the other, looking at the islands and with the lofty Vesuvio in the background, Naples is one of the more fascinating cities of the world. Its ancient downtown area is a UNESCO protected site. Originally a Greek colony called Neapolis, conquered by the Romans in the 4th BC, it became a favourite winter retreat of famous people like Virgil, Augustus, Tiberius and Nero. The Normans, Aragonese, Bourbons and French had their share in ruling over this city and all left their mark. We will visit the Archaeological National Museum located in a 16th century building originally intended to house the royal cavalry. The rich collection comprises artwork of the Farnese family and treasures of Greco-Roman origins, mosaics and artefacts, discovered in both Pompeii and Herculaneum. We will immerse ourselves in the maze of alleys and small squares of the historical old area called “Spaccanapoli’ (or the Roman decumanu maximus), admiring the rich Baroque palaces and the Churches of San Domenico Maggiore, (a 13th century outstanding example of the Anjou Gothic style), the 1584 Nuovo Gesu’ with an unusual façade of diamond pattern stonework, and Santa Chiara monastery in built in 1328 in the Anjou Gothic style with a lovely carved marble portal. Walking past the Maschio Angioino, also called Castel Nuovo (built in the 1280 by the Anjou’s and reconstructed in the 15th century) and the Royal Gardens, we will arrive in Via Caracciolo, the elegant “lungomare” boulevard and strolling place of well-heeled Neapolitans.
