The gallery was founded in 1784 and is after the Uffizi the most visited museum of the city.

In the Gallery you will have the possibility to admire the Giant (known as the David), built by Michelangelo when he was only 29 years old. He took a column of white Carrara marble, which was abandoned by another artist and produced the world wide famous statue. In 1878 the David got moved beneath a rotunda, built expressly for it. There is still a copy in its original place in the Piazza della Signoria. Some years later the David has been attacked by glass shield as same as Rome’s Pietà.
At the beginning of the 20th Century followed an impressive series of other works by Michelangelo Buonarroti: "San Matteo" (St. Matthew) and the 4 "Prigioni" (Prisoners), which were originally intended for the grave of Pope Julius II in Rome, however, at the end of the 16th century they were situated in the grotto of the Giardino di Boboli (Boboli garden); and finally the "Pieta di Palestrina" (whose assignment to an author is still very controversial).

A detailed reorganization and restoration of several rooms on the top floor allowed an extension of the exhibition for more paintings from the 15th and 16th Century. Moreover, to the visitors recently was opened the hall, in which are issued the Plaster of Lorenzo Bartolini and Luigi Pampaloni, two famous sculptors of the 19th Century.
