ISCHIA:
Famous for its thermal waters, fine beaches and spectacular scenery, Ischia is the biggest island of the bay. Ischia was one of the first Greek colonies in the 8th century BC found there. An important stop on the trade route from greece to northern Italy, it was renamed Aenaria by the Romans. In 1301 an eruption of the now extinct Monte Arso forced the inhabitants to flee to the mainland, where many stayed permanently. The spanish took the island in 1495 and ruled until a brief French occupation in the early 19th century. The English attacked in 1806, sparkling fierce fighting and the bombardment of the Castello Aragonese - the scars are still evident today. the thermal spas of Ischia claim cures for most anything that ails you. Called the Emerald Island, Ischia is studded with pine groves and surrounded by sparkling water that wash up on many sandy beaches. The island covers just over 47 sq. km and its prominent feature is Monte Epomeo, near the center, a volcano that was a powerful force and source of worry for the Greek colonists who settled here in the 8th century B.C. Besides the sandy beaches, the health spas (which utilize the hot springs for hydromassage and mud baths), the island is famous also for the vineyards producing the red and white Monte Epomeo, the red and white Ischia, and the red and white Biancolella.
